The foundation of a healthy smile starts with prevention.
Preventive dentistry is the foundation of a healthy smile — and the most cost-effective investment you can make in your oral health. At Omni Dental Studio in Riverview, FL, Dr. Ariana Merchi and our hygiene team focus on keeping your teeth and gums healthy through regular exams, professional cleanings, and early detection of problems before they become serious. The goal is simple: help you keep your natural teeth for life.
Preventive dentistry encompasses all the treatments and habits that protect your teeth and gums from disease and damage. It includes professional cleanings to remove plaque and tartar buildup, comprehensive exams to detect problems early, digital X-rays to see what is happening beneath the surface, fluoride treatments to strengthen enamel, and dental sealants to protect vulnerable back teeth. Preventive care also includes the guidance Dr. Merchi and our hygienists provide at every visit — personalized recommendations for brushing technique, flossing, diet, and any products that may benefit your specific oral health needs.
Preventive dentistry is for everyone — children, teens, adults, and seniors. Establishing a routine of regular cleanings and exams early in life sets the foundation for a lifetime of good oral health. Adults benefit from preventive care by catching issues like gum disease, cracked teeth, and early-stage cavities before they require expensive treatment. Seniors have unique needs including monitoring for dry mouth, root decay, and changes in existing restorations. No matter your age or the current state of your oral health, preventive care is the most important thing you can do to protect your smile.
A typical preventive visit at Omni Dental Studio includes several components. First, our hygienist will review your medical and dental history and ask about any concerns or changes since your last visit. Next, digital X-rays are taken as needed — usually once a year for most patients — to detect cavities between teeth, bone loss, and other issues not visible to the naked eye. The hygienist then performs a thorough cleaning: scaling to remove hardened tartar above and below the gumline, followed by polishing to remove surface stains and leave your teeth smooth. Dr. Merchi then performs a comprehensive exam, evaluating every tooth, your gum health, your bite, your jaw joints, and your oral tissues for any signs of cancer or abnormality. She will discuss any findings with you and answer all your questions before you leave.
Professional fluoride treatments are a quick, painless way to strengthen tooth enamel and reduce the risk of cavities. Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral that remineralizes enamel that has been weakened by acid from bacteria and food. At Omni Dental Studio, we apply fluoride as a varnish that is painted onto the teeth and dries quickly — the whole process takes less than a minute. Fluoride treatments are recommended for children at every cleaning visit and for adults who are at higher risk for decay, including those with dry mouth, a history of frequent cavities, or exposed root surfaces.
Dental sealants are thin, protective coatings applied to the chewing surfaces of the back molars, where the deep grooves and pits make it difficult to clean thoroughly with a toothbrush. Bacteria and food particles collect in these grooves and cause cavities — sealants physically seal them out. The application is quick and painless: the tooth is cleaned, a conditioning gel is applied briefly, and the sealant material is painted on and hardened with a curing light. Sealants are most commonly applied to children's permanent molars as soon as they come in, but adults who have never had cavities or sealants in their back teeth can also benefit.
At Omni Dental Studio, we offer Smile Perfected professional in-office whitening as an add-on to your routine hygiene appointment. The process is simple: after your cleaning and polish, a pre-filled whitening tray is placed and a specially calibrated light activates the gel for just 20 minutes. Vitamin E oil protects your lips and potassium nitrate in the formula minimizes sensitivity throughout. When you leave, you take home a reusable tray and whitening pen to maintain your results — use it every three to five days and avoid staining foods and beverages for the first 24 hours. It is the most convenient way to walk out of your cleaning appointment with a noticeably brighter smile.
A routine cleaning and exam at Omni Dental Studio typically ranges from $150 to $350 without insurance, depending on whether X-rays are taken. Fluoride treatments add approximately $25 to $50. Dental sealants range from $30 to $60 per tooth. The good news is that most dental insurance plans cover preventive care at 100% — cleanings, exams, and X-rays are typically fully covered with no out-of-pocket cost to you. For patients without insurance, our Smile Studio Club membership plan provides two cleanings, two exams, and X-rays per year for a low annual fee, along with discounts on other treatments.
Yes — preventive care is the category most consistently covered by dental insurance. Most PPO plans cover two cleanings and exams per year at 100%, along with periodic X-rays. Fluoride treatments are typically covered for patients under age 18 and sometimes for adults as well. Sealants are usually covered for children on permanent teeth. We accept most major PPO plans including Cigna, Aetna, MetLife, Guardian, United Concordia, Humana, Ameritas, Principal, Sun Life, and most other PPO plans. Our team will verify your benefits before your appointment.
What you do at home between appointments is just as important as what we do in the office. Brush your teeth for two full minutes twice a day using a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. Floss once daily to remove plaque and food from between teeth where your toothbrush cannot reach. Limit sugary and acidic foods and drinks, which feed the bacteria that cause cavities and gum disease. Drink plenty of water throughout the day, especially fluoridated tap water. If you grind your teeth at night, ask Dr. Merchi about a custom nightguard to protect your enamel. And of course, keep your regular six-month appointments — catching a small problem early is always better than treating a big one later.
