Bone Grafting

Rebuilding the foundation for a healthy, complete smile.

When teeth are lost or extracted, the jawbone can begin to deteriorate over time due to lack of stimulation. Bone grafting is a procedure that rebuilds lost bone, creating a strong foundation for dental implants and preserving your facial structure.

Why Is Bone Grafting Needed?

Bone loss can occur after tooth extraction, gum disease, or trauma. Without adequate bone volume, dental implants cannot be placed successfully. Bone grafting restores the necessary bone density and volume to support implants and maintain the natural contours of your face.

Types of Bone Grafts

We use several types of bone graft materials, including processed bone from a tissue bank (allograft) and synthetic bone substitutes. Dr. Merchi will recommend the most appropriate type based on your specific needs and the amount of bone regeneration required.

The Grafting Procedure

Bone grafting is typically performed under local anesthesia. The graft material is placed in the area of bone loss and covered with a protective membrane. Over several months, your body naturally integrates the graft material, building new bone.

Healing & Next Steps

Bone graft healing typically takes 3–6 months before implant placement can proceed. During this time, we'll monitor your progress with follow-up appointments and imaging. Once sufficient bone has formed, we can proceed with implant placement.
