Teeth Whitening FAQ

Question 1

Is professional teeth whitening safe?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Professional whitening uses clinically tested hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide gels at concentrations proven safe for enamel. Dr. Merchi protects your gums with a barrier before treatment, making it far safer than unsupervised at-home kits.

Question 2

How is professional whitening different from store-bought strips?

Accepted Answer

Professional whitening uses higher-concentration gels activated with a specialized light, delivering results in about an hour that would take weeks — if ever — with over-the-counter products. The results are also more even and longer-lasting.

Question 3

How many shades whiter will my teeth get?

Accepted Answer

Most patients achieve 4–8 shades brighter in a single in-office session. Results depend on the original shade and the type of staining (surface stains respond best; intrinsic staining from tetracycline is more resistant).

Question 4

How long does teeth whitening last?

Accepted Answer

In-office whitening results typically last 1–3 years with good oral hygiene. Periodic touch-ups with custom take-home trays can extend and maintain your results indefinitely.

Question 5

Will whitening cause tooth sensitivity?

Accepted Answer

Some patients experience mild, temporary sensitivity for 24–48 hours after treatment. We use desensitizing agents during the procedure and can recommend a sensitivity toothpaste for the days following treatment.

Question 6

Can I whiten my teeth if I have crowns or veneers?

Accepted Answer

Whitening gel only affects natural tooth enamel — it will not change the shade of crowns, veneers, bonding, or fillings. If you have visible restorations, we discuss this during your consultation so your expectations are realistic.

Question 7

How should I prepare for a whitening appointment?

Accepted Answer

Have a professional cleaning done beforehand if possible, as whitening works best on clean teeth. Avoid staining foods and drinks for 48 hours before your appointment.

Question 8

What foods should I avoid after whitening?

Accepted Answer

For the first 48 hours after whitening, avoid coffee, tea, red wine, dark berries, tomato sauce, and tobacco. Your enamel is temporarily more porous after whitening and more susceptible to restaining during this window.

Question 9

Is whitening safe during pregnancy?

Accepted Answer

We recommend postponing elective cosmetic procedures including teeth whitening until after pregnancy and breastfeeding, as a precaution. There is no evidence of harm, but it is best to wait.

Question 10

How often can I whiten my teeth?

Accepted Answer

In-office whitening can be repeated once or twice a year. Over-whitening can cause enamel sensitivity and a chalky appearance. Custom take-home trays used periodically are a gentler way to maintain your results between professional treatments.
